Stay Stitching

With necklines, shoulders, waistlines or anywhere cut on the bias or curved, to stop from stretching out of shape when you sew, sew a line of straight stitching ½ inch from the cut edge on a ?inch seam allowance.

This will prevent any stretching when you sew or press. Your pattern instructions will tell you where to staystitch. Staystitching will always be from the outer edge in towards the center or narrower edge.

The exception to this rule is a V neck. The staystitching goes from the point of the V up to the shoulder edge.

You don't have to staystitch every seam, just where the pattern says and it doesn't take long, the end result is worth the extra effort.

There is no need to remove staystitching. It remains as an aid to prevent stretching and buckling.

Staystitching, stitch in the direction of the arrows.
