Making up a Toile
This tip is called “Making up a Toile” and can save you a lot of time and worry when sewing with expensive fabrics. What you actually do is, make up your pattern in calico or muslin, depending of the fabric you intend to use. Calico, if your fabric has weight to it or muslin if it is finer/lighter. You do all your fitting with the Toile and when you have everything right, mark all the alterations and pattern markings, unpick and use this as your pattern. This is worth the extra effort when using expensive fabric and you can sew with confidence. If you make up Toiles for all your basics, like pants, skirts, jackets etc, then your sewing and fitting becomes much better and you know your garment is going to be just right.
